Volunteer FAQs

Thank you for your interest in volunteering. Below you will find answers to our most commonly asked questions. We hope this will give you the information you need — and help you decide to volunteer with us!

How do I become a volunteer?

Before volunteering, you must first attend a Volunteer Orientation. There, you’ll receive valuable information and a tour of the Mission. There are several orientations held each month. The volunteer department can work with your availability. Please contact the Volunteer Office for the next available orientation.

What kinds of things can volunteers do?

We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities such as:

  • Food service
  • Kid’s Freestyle — Gym Activities
  • Day Room Visits
  • Teaching or Tutoring in the Learning Center
  • Special events (seasonal)

Please check our Current Volunteer Opportunities for a list of what’s available.

What volunteer opportunities do you have for groups?

Groups up to 15 can help serve a meal in the kitchen. Larger groups may volunteer for special events.

How old do I have to be to volunteer?

Union Rescue Mission provides volunteer opportunities for individuals of all ages. Special kitchen assignments are offered — but are limited by availability — for children under 12.

Please inform the Volunteer Department in advance if you have children in your group. Groups of children or teenagers under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult chaperone who is over 21.

Are there evening and weekend volunteer opportunities?

Yes, we have volunteer opportunities available seven days a week, from 6 a.m. – 8 p.m. One of our greatest needs is for volunteers to help prepare and serve meals on Sunday.

Is there a dress code for volunteering?

Yes. Food service volunteers MUST wear closed-toe and closed-heel shoes, and long pants (no capris or cropped pants). Wear clothes you are comfortable in and wouldn’t mind getting a little dirty!

Do I need to have any volunteer experience?

No, we take volunteers from all different backgrounds. No experience is necessary. Just a willingness to serve.

Do you perform a background check on volunteers?

Yes, a background check is required on all volunteers older than 16 years of age. This is to ensure the safety of all our volunteers, as well as our staff and guests. Our volunteer office will provide information on locations and processes. Please be aware that you are responsible for the cost, which is approximately $25. Thank you for your cooperation.
