End-of-Month Update: May 2025

Hi, I’m Mark Hood, CEO of Union Rescue Mission, with your End-of-the-Month Update for May.
This month brought joyful celebrations, meaningful progress, and stories of hope that reflect God’s love in action. Here are just a few of the highlights:
  • This Mother’s Day, we celebrated the incredible women in our programs with joyful brunches at our Downtown Mission and Hope Gardens.
  • At Hope Gardens our longtime friends at Herbalife continued their 12-year tradition with energizing morning shakes, a tasty brunch, and soft robes for each mom—reminding them that they are seen, valued, and deeply loved.
  • At URM Downtown, each mom was honored with a delicious meal, gift baskets filled with sun hats, scarves, fuzzy socks, flowers, jewelry bags, and brand-new shoes—while their children enjoyed games and activities nearby.

And in a special raffle, four women won makeovers—complete with facials, hair styling, and makeup. More than just pampering, it was a celebration of their God-given worth, strength, and beauty.
We’re deeply grateful to the talented volunteers—Kristi Fuhrmann-Kerr, Rachel Henderson, Kristi Jones-McKenna, and Frida Silva—whose care made this moment one of hope, dignity, and joy for women courageously rebuilding their lives.
Special thanks to the amazing volunteers from Love and Unity Christian Fellowship who helped make the day so special.
Together, moments like these affirm dignity, nurture joy, and reflect Christ’s love in meaningful, compassionate ways.
This month on the Just Help 1 Radio Show and Podcast, we welcomed a powerful lineup of guests who are making a real difference in the fight against homelessness.
  • Steve Bunyard, founder of ReIGNITE Hope, shared how his welding certification program is helping men and women gain employment and build sustainable careers.
  • Lynda Palmer from Pepperdine University’s Graziadio School of Business spoke about how their partnership with URM will help us reach more community members through our powerful stories of helping people find their way home.
  • And Tim Peters, URM’s Director of Planned Giving, talked about the importance of estate planning and how you can leave a legacy that makes a lasting impact.
I’d like to talk a little more about this special form of giving, but first, I’d like to thank Denise and Matt Weaver—for opening their home and their hearts to URM this month. They graciously invited a crowd of friends and family to hear our stories, our mission and our hope for the future. And the future is where Legacy giving begins.
Legacy gifts provide essential support that sustains our mission of offering hope and healing to those in need for generations to come.
By including Union Rescue Mission in your will or estate plan, you help ensure that we meet the needs of today, while building a future where no one is left without the opportunity for a second, third or fourth chance.
There are many ways to give a legacy gift. You can:
  • Include a gift in your will or trust
  • Name URM as a beneficiary of your life insurance, retirement plan, or Donor Advised Fund
  • Set up a charitable gift annuity or remainder trust
  • Or donate real estate, stock, or other appreciated assets
Legacy giving is a powerful way to extend your compassion beyond today and ensure that each person who turns to our mission is met with dignity, care, and the opportunity to heal and rebuild through Christ’s love.

As it says in 2 Corinthians 9:7 (NIV)
“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
This month, your kindness and compassion brought joy and reflected Christ’s love to everyone at Union Rescue Mission. Thank you for faithfully walking with us—we could not do this life-changing work without you.
May God bless and keep you.
