Volunteer 2There are still many opportunities for individuals or groups to help during the Covid-19 pandemic — both at our main building in downtown LA and at our Hope Gardens Family Center in the foothills of Sylmar, California. No matter what your skills, we can find a way for you to share love and hope with those in need.

Serve a Meal

Every day, we serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We average about 2,300 meals per day! But we can’t do it without friends like you to help prepare and serve meals for guests.

Youth and Children’s Programming

Have a heart for kids living on Skid Row? Come show them a little love by providing a listening ear, playing games, reading books, doing crafts together, or just plain rocking babies! Volunteer with one of our many children & teen programs.

Come with a group or join one of our teams as an individual. Interested in volunteering with Our Kids?

Availability of activities and schedules varies, if you are interested please contact volunteer@urm.org.

A background check & 3 month commitment is required for some programs

Day Room Visits

Our men’s and women’s day rooms are open to the public from 12:00 to 2:30 p.m. daily. We would love for you to stop by to make new friends and encourage people who are looking for a safe shelter from the streets. Feel free to bring cards, dominos, board games, books, or other items to that might brighten someone’s day. The Day Room is open to our residents from breakfast until evening; if you are interested in setting up a class or an ongoing activity, please send us your ideas!

Learning Center

We are always looking for volunteers who can donate their time to help in our learning center. Opportunities are available for people who can:

  • Tutor guests and residents
  • Help with resume writing
  • Teach basic computer skills

Ice Cream Social

If you or your group is interested in sponsoring an ice cream social, we would love to talk with you about creating an event. An ice cream social can be held any time of the year in our San Julian lot, or in one of the day rooms. With your help, we are able to get ice cream with all the toppings to serve to people in the community!

Water Walks — Summer Only

Anytime it’s 85 degrees or hotter, we walk the streets of Skid Row and pass out cold bottled water. Water Walks take place Monday through Friday at 2:00 p.m.

We prefer that volunteers make a weekly or bi-weekly commitment to help.

A background check is required.
