When James first arrived at Union Rescue Mission, he had not seen his family in almost 10 years.
"I've messed up so many times before," James says. "They've heard me say 'sorry' a thousand times."
Eventually, James lost contact with his family. He ended up alone on the streets with an addiction to heroin. It would be more than 20 years before he got up the nerve to get help.
He describes Union Rescue Mission as "a place to recover your soul and transform your life."
Today, James is a drug counselor and volunteers at Union Rescue Mission. Best of all, he has reconciled with his family and sees them once a month.
This Thanksgiving, people experiencing homelessness will arrive at Union Rescue Mission needing more than a meal. They need hope. Healing. And help to start again.

James speaks with quiet assurance. Like a man changed. When he first arrived at Union Rescue Mission, he was desperate to break free of his addiction. But God led the way.
"Having to trust in God was really tough," James shares. "I came to the realization of having to surrender. That's what He intended for me. Because of my pride, I wanted to be in control. He had to humble me. You only feel His grace and His love for you when you surrender to Him."
