Olivia never thought she would end up living at Union Rescue Mission with her dad, two brothers, and two sisters.
She is just like any ordinary teenager with dreams and ambitions. Fonda Whitehead, who organizes our Girl Talk program, says of Olivia, "I know she's going to make a difference in the world."
When Olivia's family came to Union Rescue Mission, they were one of approximately 190 total moms, dads, and kids living here. Because of the dangers of the streets, kids are the most vulnerable. That's why we never turn away a family with children.
Kids who have been devastated by homelessness are going through probably the toughest time of their lives. But thanks to our partnerships with organizations like LA Clippers Foundation, Verizon, and many others, they have opportunities to see beyond their present situation and imagine something different for their lives.
Recently, Olivia had the opportunity to fly to Sacramento to attend a program sponsored by the LA Clippers Foundation.
"It was the first time I'd gone on a plane," says Olivia.
Today, Olivia lives in an apartment with her family. Speaking about her experience at Union Rescue Mission, Olivia says, "I think being in a place with other girls going through the same things I'm going through is refreshing because they know what you're going through and they're going through it too, so you have someone to relate to all the time."
She adds that at Union Rescue Mission, "You have people around you that make you feel safe and loved, and then it's not as hard as it would be to be by yourself and go through this."
Help restore men, women, children, and families with the hope of God's love.
Many of the individuals and families who come to Union Rescue Mission need help beyond the immediate basics of food, shelter, and clothing.
Inside, they are broken, damaged souls. They need a place to feel safe. To find comfort. To be part of a community where they can heal with others, and then begin to find peace through the power of God's love.
Union Rescue Mission, located in the very heart of Skid Row, welcomes anyone who needs help— men, women, children, and families. Those who enter into our programs can feel the love of God at work here.
