Union Rescue Mission

We embrace people with the compassion of Christ and transform the hearts and lives of those we encounter.

URM is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was established in 1891. Today, we are one of the largest rescue missions of our kind in the United States, and the oldest in Los Angeles.

Core Values

For over 125 years, people with feelings of distress and despair have been coming to Union Rescue Mission seeking help. URM is committed to life transformational ministry through the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ as demonstrated in these core values.

  • Respect:  With the upmost respect, we invite welcome our guests in and provide a place where they can feel safe and cared for. We go beyond a simple meal and bed by offering hope and healing. By honoring each person’s value and worth, we affirm their dignity. (Psa 23:5, Rom 12:3)
  • Relate: Life transformation occurs in the context of committed relationships. Elements of committed relationships include trust and compassion. A focus on a loving God and loving others forms the foundation of relationships. (Psa. 23:1, John 13:34,35)
  • Redeem: Redeeming a life is intentional and sacrificial because it is costly in actions and resources. (Psa. 23:2, Col. 3:12-17, Gal. 6:1) As God values redemption, we put forth our best effort to lead our guests back onto the right path, into their own relationship with God, who is the great redeemer.
  • Restore: Restoration corrects and strengthens a person using the balanced principles of truth (rod) and grace (staff).  (Psa. 23:2, James 5:19,20) We live out grace and speak truth. We encourage them to not lose sight of God and to keep close.
