“Thank you for helping men like me rebuild our lives and become the men God made us to be.” —James
A Family and a Home
We encourage all the men who graduate from URM’s program to get involved in some kind community when they leave. But we recognize that some men, for various reasons, may never be able to thrive outside the safety they find here. Men like Phillip, like all of us, want — and need — family-like love.
That’s why we started a group we call the Ambassadors — 22 senior men, between the ages of 55 and 75, who will enjoy the friendship, love, community, and family relationships they need for the rest of their lives at Union Rescue Mission.
We call them “Ambassadors” because they represent the Lord and Union Rescue Mission. They testify at churches and schools around Los Angeles of God’s grace and the healing they’ve found at URM. They work various jobs around the Mission and they pay a small rent to stay here, because they deserve that dignity.
But really it’s all about family. Someone once said that the opposite of addiction is not sobriety, it’s connectedness. The root of many addictions is a lack of love. So we work hard to create love and connections for these Ambassadors. We have family meals, family meetings, family devotions, and family events outside the Mission. In other words, we do what families do.
Your Support Transformed Their Lives
As a donor, your impact on their lives is profound. Your gifts mean that, for the first time, they feel loved and they begin to trust that love. Your support transformed theier lives. Thanks to you, they’re growing in the Lord, they have a purpose, and they’re giving back. No, they’ll never go home. They found their home here.
I encourage you to come meet these men. They’re truly extraordinary. Come serve a meal, attend a Bible study, watch a Dodger game, or just hang out with them. Or I can bring a couple of men to your church or youth group. Their testimonies will inspire you.

Healing Emotional Wounds… thanks to you!
Men, women, children and families devastated by homelessness often face serious psychological wounds—past abuse, domestic and sexual violence, overwhelming loneliness, depression, and now, the stresses of COVID-19. Some face serious neuroses, while others just need a compassionate, listening ear and practical, consistent guidance.
The Pepperdine Mental Health Clinic provides essential psychological services for men, women, children and families at Union Rescue Mission, Hope Gardens, and Angeles House, dramatically increasing their chances for long-term recovery.
The Mental Health Clinic is staffed by doctoral interns from Pepperdine University’s Department of Psychology and supervised by a Pepperdine Clinical Psychologist.
Our Mental Health Clinic provides the following services:
• Psychological assessments to clarify a diagnosis
• Treatment plans
• Individual psychotherapy sessions
• Marriage counseling
• Group therapy sessions

NOTES FROM ANDY
Thank You for Supporting Families in Need
I ’m so excited that our new Angeles House is finally open, offering shelter and hope for up to 86 families devastated by homelessness. For more than a century, people in South L.A. who needed help had to come to Skid Row. No family should have to endure this man-made disaster. Now, thanks to your support, they can stay in their own neighborhood, connected to their own churches and schools. Also, with homelessness at an all-time high, the need for Angeles House is vital. One of the most important resources available to families at Angeles House will be mental health care through the Pepperdine Mental Health Clinic. Many of the women and kids who come to us have experienced severe trauma and abuse, not only on the streets but in their past. These psychological wounds must be addressed—and now, thanks to your support of this important service, they will be. As we move forward, I can’t tell you how crucial your ongoing prayers and support will be as we continue serving vulnerable men, women, children and families throughout Los Angeles County. And with summer just around the corner, there’s no better time to give. Thanks to a generous Match, your gift today will DOUBLE. This is a wonderful opportunity to prepare for our summer months, when donations tend to slow down… but the need remains as great as ever.
Thank you for your extraordinary compassion and generosity!
