Immediate Needs

Needed: Volunteers for Meal Service at Hope Gardens Family Center

We are in need of volunteers to help prepare and serve meals to the women, children, and senior ladies at Hope Gardens Family Center located near Sylmar, CA. If you are interested in helping and meet the criteria below, please contact Monique Johnson, at mjohnson@urm.org.

Shifts:   Monday-Sunday

  •   9am-1pm
  •  1pm-4pm
  • 4pm-7:30pm

Age Requirement: 14 years and older

Volunteer(s) must be able to drive or coordinate a ride to property, as there is no bus access or shuttle service.

We need up to 3 volunteers per shift.

Need for the Learning Center

The Learning Center at URM provides amazing resources and services to URM residents and guests.  To serve our guests and residents better, we have a practical and affordable need we could use your help with.

We are looking for someone to donate 50 pairs of headphones.  Earbuds work but since these would be shared, headsets are better.  If you have some headsets laying around, or would like to pitch in to help us purchase some please email ehennings@urm.org.

Current Need: Flash Drives & Headsets

We are currently looking for donations of flash drives (any size) and headsets to use in our Learning Center. The Learning Center offers tutoring, computer access, and classes for our guests and residents at Union Rescue Mission.

Easter Outreach Event Needs

URM is hosting an Easter Outreach on March 31 where all will be invited to URM to celebrate Easter and receive items they need.  But we need your help to provide these items!  Here they are:

Bibles – Spanish and English versions appreciated

Socks – for men, women, and children

Toothpaste/Toothbrushes – travel size is best

Deodorant – again, travel size is ideal

Undergarments – Bras for women and underwear for men and women

Bottled Water

Union Rescue Mission passes out bottled water to the people in the Skid Row community during the hot summer months when it gets above 85 degrees.

Clothing

Both URM and Hope Gardens Family Center are in need of new clothes with the cold weather and holiday season approaching.  Cold weather needs include but are not limited to:

  1. Jackets for Hope Gardens guests (boys, girls, and women)
  2. Bras and socks
  3. Rubber boots

Food

As URM feeds approximately 3,000 meals daily, donated feed is consistently a blessing to receive.  Hungry men, women, and children come through our doors every day and are served a meal, often the only meal they will receive that day. Some food items you could provide to bless those in need include but are not limited to:

  • Fresh Fruit (apples, oranges, bananas, grapes,  etc.)
  • Fresh Vegetables (lettuce, onions, potatoes, carrots, broccoli, etc.)
  • Eggs
  • Rice
  • Frozen meat
  • Beans
  • Canned goods
  • Milk

And as Thanksgiving is just around the corner, frozen turkeys are in high demand at URM.

Hygiene Products

Union Rescue Mission is need of hygiene products to pass out to the guests who come to us in need.  As the cold weather approaches, the number of people that come to our doors in need of these products increases. Here is a list of what is needed:

  • Combs/Brushes
  • Feminine Care Products
  • Adult Diapers

Cleaning Products

Our hard working custodial staff does an excellent job at keeping URM clean and sanitary, helping our guests feel comfortable and respected.  Your help in donating cleaning supplies is a small way to help those that come through our doors feel right at home.  Here is a list of what is needed:

Golf Cart and Utility Vehicle

We are in need of a multi-passenger golf cart (gas or electric powered) for use at our Hope Gardens Family Center. The staff use golf carts to transport families, senior women, residents, and donors around the property.

Along with golf carts our Hope Gardens Family Center is in need of two gas powered utility vehicles (4X4 preferred).  During the rainy season utility vehicles are used for transportation and to access parts of Hope Gardens that are otherwise very difficult to reach. Additionally they are used for fire-watch, nature hikes for the kids, and daily maintenance.
