2017 Rose Parade

2017 Rose Parade

The Mission - December 2016 13This year Union Rescue Mission is honored to announce they have been selected to participate in the prestigious Tournament of Roses Parade 2017! To commemorate 125 years of service to people experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles, we honor how it all began by riding in a Gospel Wagon with vintage costumes from the year 1891.

Union Rescue Mission preached the word and served meals from a Gospel Wagon, much like the one we will be riding in during the Parade.  Founded by Lyman Stewart the wagon ministered to destitute unemployed men outside saloons as they drank away their sorrows. The wagon offered clothing and food, but most importantly HOPE. It is said that the men who sadly slipped back into drinking had “Fallen off the wagon” coining the phrase that is still used today.

Riding the wagon will be Union Rescue Mission CEO Andy Bales,  his wife Bonnie, Chairman of the Board David Dow, Board member Richard Newcomb, VP of Programs/Operations Steve Borja, VP of Public Relations Kitty Davis Walker, URM Historian Liz Mooradion, Public Relations team member Alexandra Monsibaez,  as well as Kimberly and Robert Brandt a Union Rescue Mission love story!

2016 Rose ParadeThe Love Story

A modern day tale of a life filled with years of falling off the wagon, saved by the love of a frustrated but devoted wife would make for an incredible Hollywood movie. This real life love story is that of Kimberly and Robert.  Kimberly had reached her breaking point with Robert’s drinking, but she never stopped caring for her husband. One night Kimberly a “born again” Christian heard Rev. Andy Bales on the radio program “Amazing Stories from Skidrow” she knew what she had to do. She brought Robert to get help at Union Rescue Mission and much like the lost souls back in 1891 who found HOPE on the Gospel Wagon he too found HOPE and a life transformed.  Robert who has been sober for over 2 years, the first time in over 50 years is taking one day at a time and their love grows even stronger each day.  Kimberly says “She can see the miracle taking place in Bob.  He is a changed man. He loves the Lord and everyday he’s getting healthier.”

 HELP NEEDED WOMEN IN CRISIS

LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA (JULY 2016), Single women experiencing homelessness is at an absolute crisis point on Skid Row in Los Angeles. The recent LAHSA count showed a 55% increase in women experiencing homelessness on the streets since 3 years ago. Of the 4000 more people on the streets this year compared to last, 40% are single women.

Rev. Andy Bales, CEO of Union Rescue Mission states “our number of guests is up 400 over last year at this time, the biggest increase by far is in the number of single women in the Mission since last month.  We are searching our own building for more space and increasing our capacity for cots, and reaching out to our neighboring partners to see if they have space we can share to handle the emergency.”

URM is truly the only place to turn to for sheltering single women, moms, Dads, and two parent families. Currently 633 women and moms with children stay at URM’s two facilities, along with 500 men.

“This is the first time in our 125 year history that women and children served out numbers men. We have a policy of never turning away a woman or a family with children.  Our hearts won’t let us.  Where would they go.”  Bales added.

Project Restart Kicks Off With Open House

Union Rescue Mission and its affiliate Eimago, Inc. unite in a

historic partnership between the City and the County of Los Angeles

Through a new grant program administered by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, Eimago has transformed a triplex and duplex generously donated by the City of Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency.  The project is designed to provide emergency housing for nine families that are experiencing homelessness.  Operations are being funded by the County of Los Angeles for the sole purpose of getting vulnerable families off of the dangerous streets of Skid Row and into a safe family environment.

Come celebrate the launch of Project Restart with an Open House and tour. The Project Restart Emergency Housing Program provides an environment that promotes healing for families experiencing homelessness.

Project Restart Open House and Barbeque

Thursday, May 13th 2010

4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

2528 Orange Drive, Los Angeles 90016

Families in this unique program are placed in safe housing away from the precarious streets of Skid Row where support staff will assist them in getting back on their feet. The mission is to provide a wide range of supportive case management, housing advocacy, employment assistance, children’s tutoring and after-school programs, along with other needed services, to remove the obstacles for these vulnerable families so they can rapidly return to permanent independent housing. Partnerships with a variety of other service providers both on-site and in the community make a way for educational support, financial management, medical, dental, legal, life skills training and mental health support.

From Andy Bales, CEO of Eimago and the Union Rescue Mission, “This program is a historic partnership between the City and the County.  We need more often to see these two bodies come together in one accord to tackle a problem like homelessness.  This is a complex issue and it takes a village.  We need more opportunities where community based organizations, faith-based organizations and all facets of local government come together with a common purpose to say ‘together we are stronger and we can solve homelessness, one family at a time’.”

Union Rescue Mission

Since 1891 The Union Rescue Mission (URM) has been providing a variety of services to those who find themselves homeless and impoverished in Los Angeles.  URM’s subsistence services are delivered free of charge to those in need and without any requirements – providing emergency programs that offer food, showers, hygiene items, mail services and shelter.  For those seeking a program of reintegration, URM provides recovery programs for men, women and children using education, job training, counseling, legal assistance, twelve-step programs, transitional housing, medical care, dental services, healthy meals, safe shelter and clean clothing. In June 2007, Hope Gardens Family Center opened in Sylmar – an innovative solution for families transitioning from homelessness.

Eimago, Inc.
